The The National Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip 2025—4th to 21st August 🚐

The National Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip 2025

This year the enthusiastic bunch of scientists from EQUS and Dark Matter will be astounding students and communities
from Broome to Perth (4–10 August) and Adelaide to Sydney (11–17 August)
with their quantum-loads of knowledge and all matters dark and mysterious.

The road trip team are a diverse and friendly group of scientists and science communicators with a range of experiences and knowledge. We are enthusiastic about sharing the latest discoveries in quantum technology and dark matter physics through outreach programs such as this road trip.  By doing so, we hope to engage and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, especially those in under-served areas of the country.

Our previous Road Trips

2024

19 scientists | 17 days | 8,095 kilometres | 28 cities & towns

When: 4–19, 30 August 2024
Where: Brisbane to Broome, via 22 cities and towns in northern and central Australia, as well as various metropolitan regions

2023

34 scientists | 19 days | 4,640 kilometres | 24 cities & towns

When: 7–25 August 2023
Where: Regional and remote Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, as well as various capital cities

2022

25 Scientists | 19 days | 7,030 kilometres | 40 cities & towns

The Pilot Road Trip: The WA Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip

In 2022 the Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip went National with our two ARC Centres of Excellence CDMPP and EQUS bringing in team members from universities in WA, SA, VIC, ACT, NSW and QLD from 8–26 August, during National Science Week from Brisbane, Queensland to Perth, Western Australia

With a National Science Week grant and substantial funding by the centres, we were able to bring the excitement of quantum science and dark matter discovery to even more students and communities in remote and regional parts of Australia.

2021

8 scientists | 5 days | 1,065 kilometres | 7 cities & towns

The Pilot: The WA Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip

When: 16–20 August 2021
Where: Southwest Western Australia

A team from the UWA QDM Lab jumped on a minibus and took their science to schools, fairs and pubs in southwest Western Australia, where they entertained, informed and mystified the locals in all matters dark and quantum.

With a Small Grants award from National Science Week and support from the ARC Centres of Excellence EQUS and CDM, the UWA team travelled around WA country towns in a 12-seater bus. They presented to school students from year 7 to year 12 in several towns, participated in a science fair, showed off their quantum tricks in a pub and gave well-attended public lectures in Bunbury and Albany.
The schools visited were:

  • Wagin District High School

  • Denmark Senior High School

  • Mt Barker Community College

  • Albany Senior High School

  • Newton Moore Senior High School

  • Nannup District High School

  • Dalyellup College

Along the route the Quantum Road Trip Team gave free Quantum and Dark Matter presentations to the wider community.

2018

Road Trip—the Prequel: Physics in the Outback

6 scientists | 8 days | 5,080 kilometres | 9 cities & towns

When: 28 November–5 December 2018
Where: Sydney to Perth, via Coober Pedy

Rather than sitting hunched over laptops on a boring 5-hour flight, a team of EQUS researchers drove across the country from Sydney to Perth to attend the Annual EQUS Workshop, along the way entertaining locals in remote schools, pubs and towns with some quantum quirks.
