Join QDM Lab

The QDM lab welcomes highly motivated new students and researchers who want to be at the cutting edge of precision measurement in the search for axion dark matter, low-temperature physics and hybrid quantum systems. Our team members can automatically become part of two ARC Centre of Excellence Nodes — EQUS (Engineered Quantum Systems), and DMPP (Dark Matter Particle Physics).  Both Centres of Excellence offer ample opportunity for national and international collaborations, mentoring, professional development and translational research.

As a group QDM is constantly striving for excellence in a variety of exciting projects and has a network of collaborators both nationally and internationally. We are undertaking a range of low-energy precision experiments to search for Dark Matter, and are the first laboratory to carry out direct dark matter detection experiments in the Southern Hemisphere. To test the underlying principles of physics in search for an answer to quantum gravity and to undertake novel experiments in quantum technologies, we have multiple dilution fridges that cool to near 10mK, where thermal noise is no longer an issue, and we are left with a system which is dominated by the quantum regime

QDM within the Department of Physics at The University of Western Australia, offers a work environment that is flexible, equitable, supportive and inclusive.  We are committed to improving the rates of entry and inclusion in STEM fields for people from underprivileged and marginalised groups.  Details of the Universities policies are found here.

See Student Alba Téllez of the University of Zaragoza interview the director of the QDM lab Prof. Michael Tobar, about his work and personal views on scientific research and mentorship.
