UWA Rising Stars of Science 2021

Congratulations to Ben McAllister for winning first place in the Rising Stars Awards 2021, and to David Gozzard for winning third place. We are very proud of the outstanding research work being undertaken by two of the QDM Lab’s young Associate Investigators. Their recognition is well deserved.

The awards took place on Thursday 28 October at the University Club of Western Australia Banquet Hall. The nominees each gave a three-minute presentation of their research and the winners were decided by audience vote.

Rising Stars provides a valuable opportunity to highlight the breadth of research in science at UWA, showcasing presentations by early-career researchers, it is truly a wonderful evening – and always receives top feedback! Each nominee is given three minutes to present their research/thesis (elevator pitch - accompanied by a maximum of 3 slides) after which guests, including donors and UWA alumni, are invited to vote for their favourite presentation. The top three win a cash prize (1st place - $10,000, 2nd place - $6,000, 3rd place 4,000) to be spent on furthering their research. The event acknowledges the hard-work and achievements of UWA’s up-and-coming science stars and is also an opportunity to communicate how the community will benefit from the impact of our research.

Candidates for the award must be:

  • < 10 years post PhD (with additional time for career interruption where justified)

  • Undertaking cutting edge/innovative research

  • Research has potential to have a global impact

  • An individual with ability to effectively communicate their research in a succinct and compelling nature

The Rising Stars event started in 2014 by the former UWA Faculty of Science.
